Heads up!

Have you seen these red spots on your dog when you bring them inside? If you have, you might have had the same panic attack it causes in many of the patients we see every day. Working at a veterinary clinic, we see thousands of problems, and some, I can offer some home remedy options.

These spots are caused by black flies, and they are not a medical emergency. Typically, they don't cause any itching or discomfort in dogs. Some have more reaction than others, and if you see your dog biting at or scratching their stomach, you may want to bring them to the vet or give them some Benedryl to dull the itch. As far as prevention goes, my go to is a natural fly spray. Some pet stores carry them, but it's even easier to make something at home using products you probably have in your kitchen.

My Favorite Recipe:

  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • 1 cup Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil (original scent)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil

Because flies are different in every region, or maybe you have smell preference, here are some other options for your pup:
1.
  • 4 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp citronella oil
(You can add basil and bay leaves based on smell preference)
2.
  • Dish soap
  • Water
